Review hemingway editor5/2/2023 Also, English isn’t my first language, which means I look up a lot of words and synonyms. My writing is often heavily research-based, which means I need to look up and source a lot of material. If you’re doing creative work, this is a huge benefit. Once my writing flow kicks in on Hemingway, it feels very stable and robust. Make sure you still serve the readers you meant to serve and didn’t let your ego take over. It’s important to account for this when you’re editing your piece later. You’ll be less in sync with your gut, and with who you’re writing for. Visually moving away from the platform equates to mentally moving away from the audience. In my experience, this instinct is attuned to individual platforms. As a writer, you form a gut instinct with each piece that you create. Writing on Medium for Medium feels different than creating something in a vacuum, then porting it over. You might be more authentic, but it’s also easier to get carried away. The flip side of not writing on the platform where you’ll ultimately end up publishing is that the context of that platform will be less present while you work. You’ll think less about who you’re writing for “I’m still young and naive, still foolish enough to believe I can. I wrote lines I think I usually wouldn’t have - because, while making me sound more authentic, I feel that they also make it easier for someone to criticize me. It’s not quite like journaling, but it’s definitely less prone to considering would-be opinions.Īs a result, it was much easier for me to be honest and vulnerable. Since you’re visually cut off from the place where your audience resides, your writing will immediately feel more private. It’s easier to be honest and vulnerable in your writing In this case, it’s only a subtle mental change, but actually one with several rather profound implications. Writing offline without going offlineīy outsourcing your craft from your browser to a standalone app, you’ll immediately feel less “wired in.” It’s a bit like working in an open space office vs. To get the most out of the app’s distraction-free offline mode, I used it in full-screen mode - which you can find in the ‘View’ tab once the app is open - and only switched to my browser when it was necessary. As a result, Hemingway Editor is a decent tool to check how strong a completed written piece may be, but its lack of explanation keeps it from being the best site for budding writers.I drafted two articles of about 1500 words each in Hemingway. Students who aren't well-versed in grammar rules may find themselves more confused about the edits provided than enlightened by them. It's important that young writers not only edit and revise their writing but also know why they're changing things. The largest problem, which hampers the effectiveness of the site, is that the editor only tells writers what to change, not why to change it. Hemingway Editor also gives a sense of readability, rating a submission with a grade level with which it would coincide. It even states how long it takes to read the piece of writing. It's helpful for young writers (especially teens) because it provides document information, such as how many paragraphs are included, along with the sentence, word, character, and letter counts. The Editing mode color-codes aspects of a submission that need editing. Hemingway Editor is easy to use: You can cut and paste your writing into the editor or write on the space provided on the site. The site is designed to help improve writing, but if you're not aware of grammar or editing processes, you may walk away slightly confused. But overall, I think it's a great site to use. High school and college should also have the grammar feature, but the site should know that the writing is going to be for a mature audience and not for elementary students. For middle school it focuses more on getting them to write more complex sentences while checking the grammar. For example, editing for grade school where they focus on grammar and spelling and sentence structure. I just wish there were different sections for this site. I love that it highlights sentences because then I'm constantly revising and editing. I think the site really helps with passive and active voice. Yes, my paper will be a little more difficult for a sixth grader to understand, but not for college students. My paper is subjected to an audience that has had years of English and grammar classes. I'm a college student and I'm constantly putting in my papers and my complex sentences and words are being told that they're too hard to read. While Hemingway Editor may seem to appeal to everyone, it really only appeals to elementary school through middle school.
